In a notable development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the aftermath of widespread and fatal youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Tackle Youth Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.
"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The September revolt was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic political corruption.
Terms of the New Political Partnership
According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.
Broader Political Discussions Underway
In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with a number of major political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the protests.
Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
